VALDOSTA – The No. 5 Valdosta State men’s tennis team took care of business on Wednesday with a dominant 9-0 victory over the nation’s No. 15 ranked team, as the Blazers toppled the Midwestern State Mustangs in non-conference action at The VSU Tennis Courts in Valdosta, Ga.

Leo Blay and Xavier Pineda set the tone of the match early, shutting out Chris Norrie and Vasudev Vijayaraman, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles, and Jordi Mas teamed up with Fernando Rivas to keep it rolling at No. 3 with an 8-5 win over Angel Palacios and Dillon Pineda.

Eden Peleg and Axel Holm closed out doubles action with a hard-fought 8-6 win at No. 3 over Ramon Toyos and Dylan Hall, which put the Blazers up 3-0 heading into singles play.

Mas was the first to finish in singles action, as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win over Vijayaraman at No. 3, and Rivas followed suit at No. 4 with a battle against Hall for a 7-5, 7-5 win. Davis Stewart held momentum for VSU at No. 5 with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Norrie at No. 5, and Valentin Mounoto recovered from an early set loss to take down Dillon Pineda at No. 6.

Valdosta State’s Xavier Pineda and Blay closed out the match in good form with 6-3, 7-5 and 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 wins over Toyos and Palacios at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

With the victory, Valdosta State improved to 6-4 on the season, with their only four losses coming to teams ranked in the top ten of the ITA Division II national rankings. The Mustangs saw their record fall to 4-5 overall with their loss on Wednesday.

Next up for the Blazers, it’s another showdown of two of the nation’s best, as Valdosta State welcomes No. 21 Nebraska-Kearney to town for a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
