VALDOSTA – On the heels of a great week for the Valdosta State women’s basketball team, in which the Lady Blazers picked up two Gulf South Conference wins over a pair of formidable opponents, freshman Aaliyah Cheatham’s contributions earned the Lady Blazer point guard her first career GSC Freshman of the Week honor, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Cheatham, a Perry, Ga. native, has been a key performer for Head Coach Kiley Hill’s squad throughout the entirety of the current 2015-16 season, and last week’s effort provided a clear indication of what she has to offer.
Cheatham led VSU to a victory over West Alabama on Monday night with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Her top performance, however, came during Saturday’s huge win over the top-ranked Argonauts of West Florida. In that contest, Cheatham ripped off 18 points, 12 of which came in the first half to help pad the Lady Blazers with a big 34-19 advantage at halftime. The young guard went on to connect on half of her shots in that contest (7-of-14), which helped the Lady Blazers snap the Argos’ seven-game winning streak and pick up their second straight in the process.
On the season, Cheatham ranks among the top freshmen in the league with an average of 9.4 points per game. She has 22 threes on the year and is averaging 2.1 assists per game as the Lady Blazers’ starting point guard. Last week, she averaged 15.0 points per game with six boards, seven assists, and two steals.
Valdosta State will look to extend their winning streak on Thursday in Huntsville, Ala., as they aim to knock off the Chargers for the second time this season. The contest is slated for a 6:30 p.m. EST start and can be heard live on Talk 92.1FM in Valdosta, Ga.
