Edith Marie Brooks, was born on December 19, 1958 in Tallahassee, FL, to the late Benjamin Knight and the late Mozelle Brooks Newsome.


She received her education in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Technical High School.
She continued her education at Florida Community College and completed the Certified Nursing
Assistance program. After completion of the program, she received her certification in the
state of Florida. After years of living in Jacksonville, FL, Edith made the decision to move to
Valdosta, GA. She worked at South Georgia Medical Center for 20 years and retired in
December 2015 after a full and satisfying career in the medical field. Outside of her career, she
was a member of the Eastern Star McClendon Chapter #163.
Edith was a loving mother who worked hard and devoted herself to raising her children. She
gave them unconditional love and was always willing to give to help others. Her grandchildren
were close to her heart and oh she loved them dearly. She loved to laugh and joke around with
her family and friends. She would often say “I’m twenty-four and sticking to it.” There was also
the feisty side of Edith and she didn’t mind telling you just how she felt about anything. Her
hobbies included tending to her flowers and dogs, Precious and Boomer. Also, she was a
dedicated Florida Gator fan to her heart.
On Thursday, March 12th, Edith was granted rest from her earthly journey.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her grandmother: Cassie Bennett; one
aunt: Peggy Bennett; and her nephew: Joseph Dixon, Jr.
She leaves to cherish her memories; her four children: Lonnisha Davis “Cornell”, Rebecca
Davis “Willie”, Joseph May III (Kierra), and Joshaune May “Audrey”, all of Valdosta, GA; her
Step Father: Arthur Newsome; nine grandchildren: Sequoia, Briana, Dakota, Adrinne, Fallon,
Liam, Lauren, Ayden, and Joshaune, Jr.; five sisters: Laverne Alston (Richard), and Alfreda
Jones, Cassandra Ross (Willie), and Melanie Roberts (Tommy); two brothers: Stephen
Newsome, Sr. (Sonya), and Stiley Newsome (Melissa); three uncles: Curtis Bennett
(Loraine), Melvin Bennett, and Timothy Bennett; one aunt: Stephanie Jones (Charles); her best
friends: Sarah Beamon and Juanette Williams; her God Daughter: Nadine Lewis; a host of
nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The Graveside Service for the late Edith Marie Brooks will be Saturday, March 21, 2020, 11:00
a.m., Sunset Hill Cemetery, Valdosta.
Minister Benjamin Newton will officiate.
Public viewing, Friday, March 20, 2020 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Godfrey Funeral Home.
