According to AJC, a leaked White House coronavirus task force report warns of “widespread and expanding” COVID-19 infections in Georgia and strongly recommends a statewide mandate for wearing masks.
The report stated that the current efforts are not enough and that testing and contact tracing need to be increased across the state.
In addition to requiring masks, the task force report specifically recommends that bars, nightclubs and gyms be closed, and that higher restrictions be placed on indoor dining at restaurants.
Despite Governor Kemp encouraging Georgians to wear face masks, he has continually said that a mask mandate is unenforceable and unnecessary. Additionally the Governor’s emergency orders bar Georgia cities from setting their own mask mandates or requiring measures stricter or less restrictive than his own.
Currently, Georgia is one of just 16 states without some form of statewide mandate requiring citizens to wear masks in public.
