TIFTON, Ga. – A Tifton man has been arrested for allegedly setting off bombs in the area over the course of several years.
72-year-old Douglas Kennedy is being charged with four counts of manufacturing/possession of an explosive device, four counts of criminal damage to property, one count of aggravated assault and two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation along with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATF), and the Tift County Sheriff’s Office all assisted in the arrest.
They say on August 29, 2017, the GBI’s Bomb Disposal Unit responded to a call about a blast. According to authorities, a destructive device was placed near an unoccupied vehicle, parked at the Tift Regional Medical Center two days prior.
The device was reportedly timed and detonated, causing moderate damage to the vehicle. No one was injured in that incident.
Upon further investigation, officials connected this incident to three other similar cases in the area.
According to the GBI, on December 24, 2015, a destructive device went off on the hood of an unoccupied vehicle also located in the parking lot of Tift Regional Medical Center.
Another device exploded on the door of an unoccupied apartment on August 25, 2016.
Then on August 27, 2017, a fourth device exploded inside a mailbox at a residence in Tift County.
An investigation connected Kennedy to all of these incidents.
He was booked into the Tift County Jail.
