TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Once again, another round of severe weather rolled through our area Tuesday evening, killing one in Calhoun County, knocking down trees, causing power outages, and damaging a few homes.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee issued their list of damage reports from Tuesday night. The damage was spread across the Florida panhandle, South Georgia into Northeast Florida.
A 61-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on him while hunting, according to a release from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office. Benny Hollis of Calhoun County was found by his wife when she went looking for him after he did not return home.
“Hollis had been sitting on a 12-foot-high tripod hunting stand when strong winds from the storm uprooted a massive tree which fell on him,” according to the statement.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Other reports came from locations such as Donalsonville, Ga. where a roof was blown off a house on Harrell Moye Road, according to the NWS’ storm reports. A tree also landed on a house in Blountstown, Fla. A roof was also blown off of a house on U.S. Highway 27 in Lafayette County. Lightning also hit a home on Newton Circle in Valdosta. Many other locations reported trees and power lines down.
The severe weather setup was not as strong as the system that moved through our area on Jan. 22, which caused many deadly tornadoes in South Georgia.
