22 year old Thomas Matthews and his friend 29 year old Tony Davis have been charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to distribute. Matthews was the victim of a shooting incident in the Jackson Square Apartments in Remerton Wednesday. Law enforcement officials say that the shooter is known to them and the search for his whereabouts continues.
A $50 thousand dollar donation from the Sabal Trail Transmission Company has been given to officials at Albany Technical College. The funds will support student apprenticeship initiatives.
Olympic Park in downtown Valdosta is the host site for the annual Have A Heart For the Homeless program. Officials from the Partnership to End Homelessness will be helping those in need by providing warm clothing, blankets and personal hygiene items that have been donated by the community. The event gets underway at 10 a.m. and continuing until 2 p.m.and it’s open to the public.
The Georgia Department of Education has suspended the members of the Dooly County School Board. A review of the school district’s accreditation was conducted last October by the AdvanceED agency and the overall scores for Dooly County were some of the lowest recorded by the company. Other factors were also cited in the review including the absence of a strategic plan and policy issues. After deliberating for approximately 20 minutes members of the state board decided that suspension of all Dooly County School Board members was in order and their decision will now be forwarded to Governor Nathan Deal; the county could appeal the state board’s decision.
According to Sergeant First Class Jeromy Roberts, Post #31 Valdosta Troopers investigated 154 traffic crashes, resulting in 80 injuries and 3 fatalities during the month of October 2016. Post #31 Troopers had the following activity: 551 citations, 28 D.U.I. arrests, 70 Seatbelt Violation citations, 16 Child Restraint Violation citations, 38 Distracted Driving citations and 186 Speeding citations. Post #31 Troopers also made 5 drug arrests and apprehended 2 wanted persons during the month. Troopers also had an additional 7 felony arrests and recovered 2 stolen vehicles.
