SAVANNAH — Most Georgians are aware of the growth of the film industry in Georgia, creating hundreds of jobs and pumping millions of dollars into the state’s economy.
But Georgia is also home to Hollywood-level gala events, one of which includes the Savannah Film Festival.
Hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, a world-renown art school, the festival, and the competition, provides students with opportunities as unique as the movies on the screen. It’s a chance for SCAD students to exclusively connect with leaders from the entertainment industry through master classes, coffee talks, lectures and panel discussions and a chance for Savannah, a premier film hub, to promote quality movies produced by independent and studio filmmakers.
Major film stars, such as Meg Ryan, attended the event, held last week in Savannah. Ryan received the Lifetime Achievement Award on Thursday. Her film “Ithaca,” which marks her directorial debut, was screened at the festival. Her film credits include “When Harry Met Sally,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “You’ve Got Mail,” “Courage Under Fire,” “When a Man Loves a Woman,” “Promised Land,” “Serious Moonlight,” “The Women,” “”In the Land of Women,” “City of Angels,” “Addicted to Love,” “French Kiss,” “Against the Ropes,” “In the Cut,” “Kate and Leopold,” “Proof of Life,” “Hurlyburly,” “I.Q.,” “Anastasia,” “Joe Versus the Volcano,” “The Doors,” “Prelude to a Kiss,” “Flesh and Bone” and “Restoration.”
There were screenings of several movies, of course. These included:
