Georgia Politics

COLUMBUS — Several communities have started early voting.  The political season is ramping up and we are already starting to see presidential candidates set their sites on the south and Georgia. That means big money for the state.

Presidential Candidate Donald Trump paid a visit to Georgia over the weekend, so did Ben Carson. Thousands came out to see these candidates. Local political analysts say you can expect to see more of these candidates in the south and Columbus.

“We’re going to begin to see candidates set up various offices throughout the state and certainly Columbus because it’s the second largest city.”  Said Columbus State Political Science professor Nick Easton.

Georgia is one of several states in the SEC Primary taking place March 1st. Georgia also has changing demographics. What used to a red state or mainly Republican is changing to purple. Add in the fact there is a hotly contested race and Georgia wins.

“We’re excited about what could be happening but we’re more excited about them bringing in their big caravans and spending lots of money.” Said Brian Anderson of Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce.

Greater Columbus Chamber Head Brian Anderson says Columbus will see presidential headquarters set up throughout the Fountain City and a lot of money will be spent. He believes roughly $1 million a month leading up to the March SEC Primary.

“When people come to Columbus, it’s always good. We want to make sure we tell the Columbus story along with the candidates.” Said Brian Anderson.

“There’s going to be a lot of events with political candidates are coming here. Every time something like that happens, hotels, tourism, everything does better.” Said Nick Easton.
