WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Officials at the Pentagon tells members of the Armed Forces to skip what many call the “perfect holiday gift.” With at-home DNA test being on the rise, Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Joseph Kernan and James Stewart, acting Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, have sent out a memo claiming that DNA testing companies were targeting military members with discounts and other undisclosed incentives, according to NBC.

They warn that tests could be sold to third party companies unbeknownst to the consumer, a threat that could potentially negatively affect military members more than the average consumer. “Inaccuracies could negatively affect the required disclosure of those members’ medical information,” says NBC.

Several companies have come out to defend themselves and the claims, stating that they protect the consumers’ privacy and does not share the information with third parties.

Whether it be an average consumer or military member, you want to carefully read over the agreements that these companies require.
