DOUGLAS, Ga. – When cousins Dyquarius “Shawn” Fussell and his cousin Onterio “Teezy” Fussell ignited Facebook Live with their discovery of a toddler in the middle of the road a couple of weeks ago, they couldn’t have fathomed what would come of the incident.

Since then they’ve been featured by multiple media outlets, gotten a Badcock shopping spree, invited by countless people to their places of business, or into their lives. The video showed how the two happened upon the child, with Shawn’s sweet-natured compassion as he put his hoodie on the child, and Teezy’s hilarious 29-minute narrative that made the video and story go viral that cold, drizzly Sunday afternoon.

The attention has been heady.

Just when they thought the accolades were leveling off, Douglas Mayor Tony Paulk declared Jan. 31 “Shawn and Teezy Fussell Day.”

They were honored at the Douglas City Commission meeting this week by police officers and city officials for finding the little boy who had wandered away from his home only wearing a diaper.

“We just want to thank the City of Douglas and everybody else that showed us love and appreciation,” Shawn said at the meeting. “We thank y’all, and we love y’all. We’re glad God put us there, and that we could help.”

The Douglas Police Department presented the Fussells with a certificate of appreciation, Fox 31 reported. The child’s grandfather was also there to express his appreciation and declared he’d donate to local charities in their honor.

Mayor Paulk said, “God uses unlikely people to do great and wondrous things. These gentlemen saw something that was abnormal, and they took the appropriate action. That’s what builds a community. Everybody is involved. Everybody is taking care of each other.”
