ROSWELL, Ga. – A 64-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man found themselves to be victims of a seven-year-long scam. This elderly couple reported to Roswell police last month after receiving a suspicious package, according to AJC.

In 2012, the Roswell couple saw an online listing for 220 pounds of gold bars from Africa and decided to act on the deal. Fast forward seven years and they’ve spent a total of $500,000 and have yet to see their promised fortune.

The couple says that gold was allegedly seized at the Atlanta airport back in 2012 and has been held in storage ever since.

The woman says that they decided to contact the authorities after their latest package, containing $12,500, was sent from a Marietta, Ohio address. Instructions for the money was to pay the storage fees for the gold at the Atlanta airport and to send the remaining cash back to Ghana.

She also added that she filed two Internet Crime Center reports with the FBI but hasn’t heard anything back, says AJC. The FBI stated that they receive 800 to 1,200 complaints in one day.
