ATLANTA, Ga. – Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp and President Donald Trump have been chummy since Kemp took office.

But now that Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson is preparing to retire due to health concerns, that open seat has the pair at odds.

Governor Kemp has recently begun telling his fellow Republican officials that he plans to appoint Kelly Loeffler, a CEO of Bakkt in Atlanta, a bitcoin trading platform, and co-owner of WNBA Atlanta Dream to Isakson’s Senate seat.

Fox News host Sean Hannity called Ms. Loeffler a “centrist businesswoman” on his website, saying that she could “seriously harm the White House’s efforts to end the Democrats’ ongoing Ukraine hearings and other pointless investigations.”

Hannity took to his Twitter and urged conservatives to call Mr. Kemp, asking, “Why is he appointing Kelly Loeffler?”

Trump prefers GOP Rep. Doug Collins, a strong ally and top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee. Collins would ostensibly continue to support Mr. Trump if appointed to the Senate, which would vote on whether to remove the president from office if he were impeached by the House, according to the NYT.

Kemp took Loeffler to the White House to meet Trump in November but it didn’t go quite the way the Georgia Governor had hoped. Trump, ironically, pointed out that Loeffler had never run for an elected office before and wasn’t ready to wield the kind of heft a Senate seat would grant.

Trump also noted during the meeting that Loeffler hadn’t backed his presidential campaign.

Meanwhile, Gov. Kemp remains stalwart on his decision to pick the long-legged blond, remarking that he felt she would appeal to suburban female voters who jumped GOP ship when Trump took office.

This process has been going on for months, with a unique online portal for people to apply for the seat.

If Loeffler snags this seat, she’ll be only the second woman to be a Georgia Senator.
