BUTNER, N.C. – Joe Burton, 74, a former metro Atlanta medical examiner died Friday from an apparent heart attack while serving a federal prison term.

Burton was sentenced in August 2018 for trading opioids for sexual favors and was already in failing health at the time.

He was sentenced to eight years.

Burton had a storied career and helped solved many crimes through his forensic examinations.
