FARGO, Ga. – Recent rain and decreased fire activity in the Okefenokee Swamp will allow officials to reopen Stephen C. Foster State Park on Friday.
The West Mims wildfire is still active, but it is contained in areas around the park. The fire is currently 152,478 acres and 65 percent contained.
Stephen C. Foster State Park is the west entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. The park has been closed since April 21.
The National Wildlife Refuge says boating is not available due to low water levels, and boardwalks and trails are closed due to fire equipment across the trails.
They urge visitors to use caution in the park and be aware of closures for their safety and firefighters still working in the area.
All campfires and charcoal grills are temporarily banned throughout the refuge.
The main entrance to the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge near Folkston remains closed to all public access.
The Suwannee River Sill and The Pocket of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will also open Friday.
