VALDOSTA – While many are being forced out, Hanna Carrol is forcing herself in to one of Louisiana’s deadliest storms.

“I’m excited but worried that I might not be able to find my way around there”, says Carrol, a Disaster Volunteer for Red Cross.

Less than 24 hours ago, the Valdosta retiree got a call from Red Cross to pack her bags.

“I like to be helping people in need, regardless of where they are.”

By Monday night, she will be in Baton Rouge helping in a local emergency shelter.

“People say you’re still doing that, I couldn’t do that.”

At 78, Carrol says she still isn’t finished helping people. She’s been on the Disaster Action Team since her last deployment to Louisiana after Katrina.

“I saw how poor a lot of people are and when they get a little handout, this is kind of similar. They’re so grateful.”

Some of the memories Carrol says she relives each day.

“I over and over realize that I can be grateful for everything that we take for granted everyday.”

Like a warm bed, or place to call home — What she’ll soon be offering to those in need in Louisiana. The Red Cross says 23 volunteers from Georgia are already there. An additional 500 are also on there way to help.
