
Release from the Georgia State Patrol
On 8/3/2016 at approximately 1525 hours, Cpl. Chris Kelch responded to a single vehicle collision on Lawson Mill Pond Road near the Lowndes County line in Brooks County. A red 2002 Ford Explorer, driven by 18 year old Devontae Deshawn Head of Quitman was traveling west on Lawson Mill Pond Road. The vehicle traveled off the north shoulder of the roadway. Mr. Head over corrected causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise. The vehicle traveled off the south shoulder of the roadway and down an embankment. The vehicle then overturned on its passenger side and struck a tree with the top of the vehicle. The vehicle then fell back to its tires and came to a final rest off the south shoulder of the roadway facing south. Mr. Head was pronounced deceased on scene by Brooks County Coroner Mike Miller. Mr. Head was fully restrained at the time of the collision and no airbag deployment was observed. Troopers do not suspect drugs or alcohol to be a contributing factor in this collision. No charges will be filed in this collision. Next of kin for Mr. head has been notified. (End of Official Release)
Troopers do suspect that Mr. Head may have been using his cell phone at the time of the crash due to the placement of the phone when located. Troopers are unable to unlock the phone to determine if Mr. Head was actually using the phone. Pictures were taken by GSP and a couple are attached that are safe to be used in your reports.
