The investigation continues into the death of 24 year old Brenda Arreguin in Atlanta. She was riding with 19 year old driver Francisco Maldonado when she opened the passenger door of the vehicle and jumped out. She was pronounced dead at Wellstar hospital.
Delegates to the Democratic convention gathered to decide between giving their support to Hillary Clinton or to Bernie Sanders. Drawing even more attention was the battle to lead the delegation as Georgia’s Democratic Party chair DuBose Porter, a Clinton supporter, came up against challenger Julie Kisaka, who is a Bernie Sanders delegate. Porter won the leadership vote.
AAA reports that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline dropped to $2.12 over the weekend in Lowndes County. That amount is nine cents less than it was a week ago. The lowest Lowndes County gasoline price was found at a West Hill convenience store for $1.94 cents a gallon, while the Georgia average price per gallon was at $2.22 and the national average came in at $2.34.
27 year old Cecil Hill Jr. has run afoul of the law again in Thomasville after being released from jail on aggravated assault charges. He was spotted by police just one week later and surveillance captured him throwing bags of marijuana from his vehicle, which he later abandoned. Hill led officers on a brief foot chase but was apprehended. He now faces possession and distribution charges, along with felony flight and traffic violations.
Mayor John Gayle and members of the Valdosta City Council will meet in regular session on the second floor in City Hall in Council Chambers Thursday at 5:30 p.m. The agenda includes consideration of a resolution authorizing the filing of an application with the U. S. Department of Justice-Bureau of Justice Assistance, to apply for Grant Funds for improvements to the law enforcement capabilities of the Valdosta Police Department and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office.
Motorists should be on the lookout for double lane closures are scheduled for two days on Interstate 75 North for the addition of new welcome center signage. The welcome center, located between Exits 2 and 5, closed for renovations since late October is scheduled to reopen June 27. Traffic will be impacted Monday and Tuesday, June 20 and 21 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lanes will reopen as soon as installation is complete.
