The votes have been tallied, and the Lowndes County School Board races have been declared too close to call until military and provisional ballots are counted. In the race for Sheriff former sheriff Ashley Paulk, a democrat will challenge incumbent republican sheriff Chris Prine. County Commissioner Joyce Evans retained her seat and the new Probate Judge is Deitra Powell. In the race for the state legislature incumbent Dexter Sharper will return to the state capitol and interim Tax Commissioner Felicia Williams came away with an election victory. The home invader covered his face with a red bandanna and brandished a handgun but Antonio Thomas was able to force his door shut leaving the intruder outside. However, after the door slammed the robbers gun discharged. Thomas and his female companion left the residence and went to a neighbors to call the police. Thomas was slightly grazed either by a bullet fragment or by wood from the door. He did not require hospital treatment.

Tift County Sheriff Gene Scarborough of Tift County is warning residents to be aware of a scam artist working the area. Citizens have notified the sheriff’s office about phone calls from individuals claiming to be Tift County deputies or representatives of the office. The caller informs the resident that they or a member of their household has had a warrant issued against them for failing to report for jury duty or for a bench warrant. The resident is then given the option to send money via money order or to meet in person in front of the courthouse in lieu of being arrested. Sheriff Scarborough advises victims to simply hang up and dial 911.

Meigs Mayor Linda Harris has been voted out of office in a recall election. According to Georgia Code 21-4-13 (2015), since more than one-half of the votes cast were in favor of recall, the Meigs mayor’s office will immediately become vacant once the votes are certified. A special election will be called to fill the vacancy.
