VALDOSTA – A Superior Court of Lowndes County grand jury has indicted a Valdosta man for malice murder.

Timothy Jerome Wiggins Jr., was indicted Friday for malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, according to court documents.

The charges stem from the August 17 shooting death of Anthony Barber, 25, of Valdosta.

Barber sustained several gunshots to the torso, according to incident reports from the Valdosta Police Department. Barber’s body was discovered behind a vacant residence in the 1700 block of Ricardo Street by an individual looking to rent the home.

Investigators believe the shooting happened in retaliation for Barber’s perceived cooperation with detectives who were investigating a fatal shooting on Caldwell Drive that happened a few days earlier. However,Barber had not spoken with police about the incident, according to VPD Chief Brian Childress.

Investigators arrested Wiggins in Miami, Florida one month after the shooting. He was reportedly staying with relatives in the area.

A trial for Wiggins will be set at a later date.
