THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The driver of a tanker truck that overturned on Monday has been charged with failing to maintain lanes and speeding under the conditions, according to officials.

The truck was hauling thousands of gallons of fuel and overturned onto its side around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of US 19 and US 84 in Thomasville. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Tuesday, crews spent the day digging up dirt at the crash site that has any trace of the fuel. Contaminated dirt is being completely removed and new dirt is being brought in.

The cleanup is expected to take days and cost thousands of dollars.
