Driving in the U.S. is getting increasingly dangerous due to road rage. Between 2014 and 2023, road rage shootings increased by more than 400%, from 92 to 481, according to an analysis conducted by The Trace.
In some states, confrontational driving tends to be less common, putting drivers at lower risk when they get behind the wheel. So, which states have the most polite drivers?
To find out, Forbes Advisor surveyed 10,000 licensed drivers and compared all 50 states across nine key metrics.
We found that Georgia ranks #4 among the states with the most polite drivers.
Top 5 States With The Most Polite Drivers:
- Hawaii: Hawaii has the lowest percentage of drivers who have experienced honks of frustration while driving (38.5%) and the second lowest percentage of drivers who have been forced off the road (3%).
- South Dakota: South Dakota has both the lowest percentage of drivers who have been on the receiving end of yelling, insults and threats (15.5%) and the lowest percentage of drivers who have been forced off the road (1.5%).
- North Dakota: North Dakota has the fifth lowest percentage of drivers who experience road rage very frequently in their home state (1.5%) and the sixth lowest percentage of drivers who say another driver has yelled at them, insulted them or made threats (20.5%).
- Georgia: Georgia has the second lowest percentage of drivers who have been yelled at, insulted, or threatened by another driver (18.5%) and the fifth lowest percentage of drivers who have been blocked from merging or changing lanes (26%).
- Maine: Maine has the lowest percentage of drivers who say another driver has tried to block their car from merging or changing lanes (20.5%) and the third lowest percentage of drivers who say another driver has cut them off on purpose (28.5%).
