GBI Investigates Officer Involved Shooting in Brunswick

SEPTEMBER 20, 2020

Brunswick, GA (September 20, 2020) – On Saturday, September 19, 2020, at approximately 5:36 p.m., the GBI was requested by the Brunswick Police Department to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation that occurred on Grant Street located in downtown Brunswick.

Preliminary information indicates that a few minutes after 5:00 p.m., a Brunswick Police Officer was patrolling downtown Brunswick when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. While looking for the vehicle, police encountered a man on foot who ran upon seeing the police. 

A foot chase ensued, at which time the individual fired numerous shots in the direction of another officer. That officer, Lt. Donald Babbin, returned fire, striking Charles Eric Moses, Jr., 33, of Brunswick. Moses was transported to Southeast Georgia Health System where he was pronounced deceased. A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Moses will be transported to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler where an autopsy will be conducted. No officers were injured during the incident. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, it will be turned over to the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review.
