ATLANTA, Ga. – One Atlanta high school senior has sparked a conversation about the issues that some students face, according to AJC. Christopher Taylor is a recent graduate who is also transgendered.
He alerted school officials that he legally changed his name once he turned 18 and according to Taylor, the school was very cooperative with the process. This became more difficult once it reached the district level. Taylor says that although his name was called during the ceremony, the fact the program and his diploma still reads his old name illustrates the many issues that transgender students face.
At this moment, school leaders are watching a pending case in the U.S. Court of Appeals. On December 5 an Atlanta panel will hear arguments on a Florida case where a transgender student was barred from using the boy’s restroom even though he had surgery and his gender changed on his birth certificate.
The courts agreed that this act violated the student’s civil rights and was sex discrimination, the school’s appeal will be considered during the panel in Atlanta.
