ORLANDO — The three remaining defendants charged in the death of former FAMU drum major Robert Champion are set to go to trial this month.
The attorneys for Aaron Golson, Benjamin McNamee, and Darryl Cearnel told Judge Renee Roche on Tuesday that they were ready for trial. Judge Roche scheduled trial for commencement on April 20.
All three defendants are charged with manslaughter and felony hazing in the November 2011 beating death of Champion, then 26, during a brutal ritual hazing session on a parked band-chartered bus in a parking lot after a FAMU football game. In all, 15 of the band’s members were charged in Champion’s beating death.
Several took plea deals from prosecutors including probation and community service. The suspected ring leader of the beating, Dante Martin, received prison time when he was sentenced to over 6 years on prison in January of this year.
