VALDOSTA — Round two of the Chamber’s popular Campaign Academy is set to kickoff next week. The event, designed for those serious about running for an elective office, will provide a better understanding of what goes into planning and executing a successful campaign.
“The Campaign Academy sheds light on the difficult and complex path to elected office,” said Campaign Academy Chairman Brad Folsom. “Our goal is to equip local business leaders interested in serving in public office with the tools and information they need to successfully advocate for our community’s interests. It is our hope that when our current representatives pass the torch, we will continue to have a strong voice at every government level.”
Campaign Academy 201 will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 6:00 p.m. The evening will include guest speakers – from knowledgeable campaign organizers to members of the Board of Elections – to provide insight and an overview of the campaign process. Campaign Academy 201 will build upon the topics and discussions of the first session, however, participation in Campaign Academy 101 is not a prerequisite to attend.
“I think it’s a great idea that the Chamber is providing these sessions for the community to help potential candidates prepare for what is needed for a successful campaign,” said Chamber 101 participant, John Page. Page is the owner of Page Insurance and Financial Services and a former county commissioner. “It’s important to realize the financial cost and time commitment involved in running for an elective position, as well as to identify those life experiences you can bring to a particular office that will help you better serve the people. The topics covered at these sessions really help those who are looking at running. I wish Chamber Academy had been around a few years ago to better prepare me for when I first ran for office.”
The Chamber is making the growth and development of Valdosta-Lowndes County a top priority. The Government Affairs Council hopes the program will help to keep those familiar with the needs of the local business community prepared for seats in public office. The success of the first event has the Chamber anticipating another energetic and informative session.
Campaign Academy is open to anyone who has made the decision to run for local, state or federal elective office. You do not need to be a Chamber member to participate.
