ATLANTA — The 2017 neutral site season opener in Atlanta featuring Florida State and Alabama will payout a whopping $5 million per team, according to a report by the Palm Beach Post.
The payout is a hefty increase from the $3.5 million the Seminoles will make when they face Mississippi in Orlando for the 2016 season opener.
The FSU-’Bama matchup is scheduled for Sept. 2, 2017, and will be the first regular season college game played in the Atlanta Falcons new home.
“(The game) will be one of the highlights of the college football season,” FSU athletic director Stan Wilcox told the Palm Beach Post. “(It will) be on par with some of the biggest non-conference games in recent history.
“The exposure for our university and our athletics program will be invaluable. We look forward to the game and playing in a fantastic venue.”
The game will be a reunion of sorts for Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher and Alabama coach Nick Saban. Fisher served as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator under Saban from 2000-04 when the two were at LSU.
They have never faced each other as head coaches.
“To be able to go against someone who you have a ton of respect for in Nick and the program in which they have just adds to it,” Fisher told the Palm Beach Post.
Saban felt the game will benefit both schools.
“This is a great opportunity to open the 2017 season against an outstanding Florida State program,” Saban said in a statement. “Jimbo has done an excellent job there and this will provide a great challenge for our team. Having this game first on the schedule will give our players plenty to look forward to and prepare for in the offseason.”
