DOUGLAS, Ga. – According to WALB, Amanda Jacobs Coleman was found guilty of the murder of 2-year-old Brooklyn Aldridge following a two-day jury trial. Coleman was sentenced to life in prison, without the possibility of parole by Judge Andy Spivey.
On March 6, 2018, the body of two-year-old Brooklyn was found by Coleman. Coleman claimed that she was the only one to have contact with the toddler during that day and laid her down for a nap after the toddler said that she wasn’t feeling well. There were no signs of external injuries.
Two-year-old Brooklyn was the only child in the household that was not biologically related to Coleman, who admitted to being stressed and having a recent methamphetamine relapse.
An autopsy was performed by Dr. Sims-Stanley who concluded that the injuries were consistent with Brooklyn’s head hitting a solid, flat surface (like a wall or floor). She went on to compare the amount of force needed to create injuries to falling from a second story window or being in a car wreck.
The defendant called on expert Dr. Adel Shaker, who disagreed with Dr. Sims-Stanley’s conclusion and opined that the injuries were consistent with slipping on a tile floor.
Dr. Shaker’s ethics came into question by prosecutors when his history of falsifying autopsy reports and changing conclusions and testimonies during trials.
The jury took only an hour to deliberate before the guilty verdict.
