THOMASVILLE – Folks in Thomasville are saying goodbye to dry Sundays. A new ordinance, which passed by an overwhelming majority, says alcohol can now be sold on Sundays in restaurants and stores. The question of whether or not it would happen, has been looming for months. Many residents felt like it was well overdue.
“I figured awhile back that they would eventually get it passed to have alcohol and beer sales in Thomasville,” said Eric Champion, a resident of the city.
A vote held on Tuesday showed that more than 70% of voters were in favor of the sale of alcohol on Sundays.
“We’re looking forward to seeing what we can do with the extended availability of selling alcohol in our business,” says Carolyn Cadenhen
Cadenhen is the owner of SoHo in downtown Thomasville. She owns just one of the businesses that could see a direct impact from this new ordinance.
“I was really pleased that it passed. It means a lot to the restaurants in Thomasville. we have an event space upstairs so now we can do events on Sunday. We can do holidays on Sunday now, and we can stay open really later on Saturday nights which is really nice,” Carolyn said.
The city also believes that the new ordinance could positively impact the local economy.
“It’s going to generate some more revenue for the businesses that operate on Sunday. It’s going to benefit the people who drink alcohol and just want to be able to have access to it without going out of the city to get it,” said Greg Hobbs, Mayor of Thomasville.
While not everyone agrees with the ordinance, many others say they’re looking forward to seeing what it means in terms of growth for downtown and the community.
This ordinance will go into affect May 1st.
