The study by personal injury lawyers Scott Vicknair analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see which states had the highest rates of gun deaths when excluding incidents of self-harm.

It found that Mississippi is the state where you’re most at risk of firearm accidents. In 2022, there were 536 gun deaths in the state, which for a population of 2,940,057 people comes out to 18.23 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

Louisiana takes second on the list, with an average of 16.54 gun deaths per 100,000 people in the state. This is due to 2022 seeing 759 gun deaths for a population of 4,590,241 people.

Taking third on the list is Alabama, which has 12.67 gun deaths per 100,000 people. This is due to there being 643 gun deaths in 2022 for a population of 5,074,296.

New Mexico comes fourth on the list, with a total of 250 gun deaths in 2022. This, for a population of 2,113,344 people, comes out to 11.83 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

Commenting on the findings, a spokesperson for Scott Vicknair said: “While some states can be more or less accepting than others with guns in the US, it’s interesting to see where these hotspots for gun deaths are. Many states featured in this list are in the south of the nation, and while these numbers at first glance may seem low, the difference between even the states in first and tenth on this list is concerning.”
