DAYTONA BEACH — The unusually warm December weather has brought scores of people to Florida beaches. It has also brought out the man-of-wars.
Reports from Daytona state 32 people have been treated for stings from Portuguese man-of-war with one being taken to a Volusia County hospital.
According to the Orlando Sentinel, a victim was treated at the hospital with possible anaphylaxis, but was not badly injured. All other stings were treated with vinegar on the scene.
Though they look like jellyfish, Portuguese man-of-wars are a type of siphonophore, according to the National Ocean Service in the Sentinel report.
Their stings can be painful, but usually don’t lead to serious injuries.
Because the water temperature remains around 70 degrees, Volusia County Beach Safety will keep extra life guard stations, Jenkins said.
