ALBANY — A man was found guilty of slamming an officer’s hand in a door at Dougherty County Jail.

On August 23, Cody Kalawaia shut a shower stall door on Officer Melvin Downs’ hand. One of his fingers was broken during the incident.

Kalawaia was found guilty of aggravated battery and obstruction of an officer.

The superior court jury gathered for two hours before charging Kalawaia. He could be facing 20 years in prison.

Kalawaia’s record is stacked with other convictions. He was convicted of burglary in 2011 and seven counts of entering automobiles, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in 2013.
