VALDOSTA — Two, 13-year-old juvenile males were arrested on Friday after bringing a gun to school. The students were sent to the principal’s office after a J.L. Newbern Middle School teacher found a magazine clip in one of the student’s possession.
The principal searched the boy’s book bag and found a 9mm pistol and a bullet, which were a match to the magazine clip that was found.
The police report stated that the School Resource Officer determined that both of the juveniles had possession of the firearm while at school. After investigating, the officer received knowledge that the boys had found the gun off campus, and that the children were not planning to use the gun at school.
The juveniles are currently being held at a Young Detention Center.
The Valdosta Police Department and Valdosta City Schools plan to link up and assign a resource officer to each city school to address issues such as these.
According to the police report, Chief Brian Childress said, “These were young kids who found a gun and made two bad decisions: not calling the police or telling parents when they found it and bringing the gun to school to show another friend.”
