VALDOSTA, Ga. – There are three words to describe LHS’ new coach: gregarious, ambitious, and most importantly involved. Lowndes County Athletics and the Viking Touchdown Club held a press conference to introduce Coach Jamey DuBose to the Viking boosters and fans.
Coach DuBose has been on multiple interviews since it was announced that he would be taking over the beloved team. He broke the ice amongst the crowd with jokes about how he can usually out talk the interviewers and tonight was no different. DuBose comes to Lowndes High School from Central Phenix City, Alabama where he held a 66-11 record. He served as head coach 14 out of 26 years in the state of Alabama and winning three state championships.
While winning is definitely a priority on the list for Coach DuBose, there is one thing that’s even more important and that’s education for his players.
“It’s not about the Auburns, the Alabamas, the Georgias, the Tennessees, the Floridas and all that. Okay, it’s getting your education paid for,” said Coach DuBose, he continued to say, “There’s a lot of guys that walk out on that field that don’t have a 4.0 GPA, okay. I didn’t have a 4.0 GPA and I got my education paid for through athletics. That’s what I love, academics and athletics play hand and hand.”
He plans for academics to play a major role in his new program at Lowndes High School. Not only does the new head coach remember all of his wins but he remembers the schools that his players go to and the stories that got them there.
The head coach had this to say about his newly gained Viking family, “We’re all about family, and you’re going to learn that. It’s very important to me and I’m not just talking about my family, I’m talking about the Viking family. The Lowndes family… I always tell everybody, ‘I’m not their fathers,’ but I’m going to treat them like they’re my sons.”
