LOWNDES CO., Ga. – On Monday, November 4, 2019, at approximately 3:00 p.m., deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, Interstate Criminal Enforcement unit conducted a traffic stop on a 2019 Hyundai Sonata, traveling southbound on I-75 at the 11 mile marker.
The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office released a statement Wednesday reported that the driver of the vehicle, Zhikang Yan, was stopped for following another vehicle too closely and failing to maintain his lane. Contact was made with the driver, and indicators were observed of criminal activity during a roadside interview.
A Lowndes County canine conducted a “free air sniff” around the vehicle and alerted to the presence of odors it is trained to detect.
A probable cause search of the vehicle was conducted, and revealed approximately 61 pounds of marijuana in luggage located in the trunk.
Yan was arrested for trafficking marijuana and is currently “lodged in the Lowndes County Jail,” according to a statement released from the LCSO Captain Stryde Jones.
