National Guard Suicide Rate on Rise

According to a recent report from the Pentagon, the number of suicides in the National Guard has surpassed the active-duty force and the reserves, as well as the civilian population.

Almost 31 people of every 100,000 in the National Guard died by suicide in 2018, the Pentagon’s first-ever Annual Suicide Report for 2018 said, compared to 24.8 active-duty service members, and 22.9 reservists.

A number of initiatives have been started to provide resources for at-risk National Guardsmen, including partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs to have Mobile Vet Centers open to soldiers and airmen, and funding a dozen state-level pilot programs around the U.S.

The National Guard is not alone. Up to 541 servicemembers died by suicide in 2018.

The Air Force is the only branch that saw a decrease – 58 active-duty airmen died by suicide in 2018, compared to 63 in 2017.

Sixty thousand veterans died by suicide between 2008 and 2017, according to a report from the VA last week, which is more than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War.

The Lifeline network is available 24/7 across the United States. Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) to reach a trained counselor. Use that same number and press “1” to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.
