After William Moldt disappeared from Palm Beach County, Florida over 20 years ago, his family was left reeling. Now, thanks to Google Earth, they finally know what happened to him, 22 years later.

On November 7, 1997, Moldt left from a bar, calling his girlfriend to say that he would be home soon before getting into his vehicle alone and driving off. According to WPTV, Moldt did not appear intoxicated. He was never seen again.

According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, a former resident of a neighborhood in Wellington, Florida was looking at an aerial view of the neighborhood via Google Earth when they noticed something strange in the water.

The Google Earth image shows a retention pond that appears to have a car in it. After contacting the current resident who used a personal drone to identify the object, they immediately contacted the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.

As police worked to remove the car that was “heavily calcified”, they discovered skeletal remains inside, which were immediately transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office. On Tuesday, the remains were positively identified as those of William Moldt.
