VALDOSTA — Approximately 1,500 gallons of sewage spilled in Valdosta Tuesday afternoon and 3,300 more gallons spilled Thursday morning.

Tuesday’s spill in the 3700 block of Knights Academy Road was caused by a lateral split in a four-inch PVC sewer force main. The sewage seeped into an adjacent drainage ditch. Some of the sewage entered Cherry Creek, according to a press release from the city.

Thursday’s spill was caused by an eight-foot solid grease blockage in a residential neighborhood sewer main, according to the city. The spill occurred around 8:15 a.m. along the 900 block of Madison Avenue, according to a press release.

City officials plan to distribute education materials concerning the proper disposal methods of cooking fats, oils and greases to hopefully prevent further issues.
