More candidates have qualified for election in the general primary taking place on May 24th. Calvin Troy will run for the office of sheriff of Lowndes County, Leroy Butler Jr. has qualified to run for the post 3 tax assessor and Ronnie Weeks will run for the County Board of Education in District 4.
The issue of extending the boundary lines for the City of Valdosta will be on the agenda for the Thursday meeting of the Mayor and City Council. A developer wants to construct a grocery outlet that also houses a drive thru pharmacy and a convenience store. Gusto Development has requested that city leaders approve the annexation of the property in question into the city. Members of the Greater Lowndes Planning Commission have recommended both the re-zoning and annexation requests. The City Council meets Thursday at 5:30 pm at City Hall.
The removal of contaminated soil discovered at the Department of Transportation for Lowndes County Schools in 1998 at an approximate cost of $60,000 could bring reimbursement for the school system. Members of the County Board of Education have already discussed making application to the Georgia Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund to recoup their expenditure. An investment of over $115,000 was initially made by the school system when the contaminated soil was found. According to the record the county board was responsible for payment of the first $10,000 and could make application for a full reimbursement thereafter. In 2006 a $34,000 reimbursement was made and in February another $20,000 was received. The issue will be discussed again at the next County School Board meeting on March 14th.
The 16 year old boy that has been charged with the murder of Fatisha Clark age 33 will be charged as an adult. Georgia law holds that teenagers ages 13-16 face adult charges in such cases. Clark was at the Ryce Community Center park with her children when the drive by shooting occurred. She later died at a hospital.
Moultrie native and Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney David Miller, has announced that he will not seek re-election. The current assistant district attorney Brad Shealy is expected to qualify to seek election to that post in the May primary. Miller began his career in the office of District Attorney in 1997.
Harry Young the sheriff of Grady County has decided to seek re-election as a Republican citing that for him personally the time for a change had come. Young’s opponent Duke Donaldson is running as a Democrat. Lowndes County Sheriff Chris Prine is also running for re-election as a Republican while his opponents Ashley Paulk and Calvin Troy are running as Democrats.
