VALDOSTA – On March 3, 2016 at approximately 4:25 pm, Valdosta Police Officers were dispatched to the intersection of Clay Road and E. Hill Avenue in reference to a traffic accident between a 1993 Chevrolet pick-up truck and a tractor trailer.

The investigation revealed that the driver of the Chevrolet pick-up was traveling westbound on E. Hill Avenue and the tractor trailer was stopped waiting to turn onto Clay Road in front of the pick-up. The driver of the pick-up was attempting to download music on his cellular telephone and rear-ended the tractor trailer.

The driver of the pick-up, who was not wearing a seat belt, sustained serious injuries and was transported to South Georgia Medical Center by EMS.

“Drivers need to pay attention to the road at all times. Cellular telephones are a distraction to drivers. Anytime a driver looks at their cellular telephone, they have taken their eyes off of the road for about 5 seconds. If traveling at a speed of 55mph, the driver will have traveled the entire length of a football field before focusing back on the roadway. Distracted drivers are a harm to themselves and everyone on the roadway. The Valdosta Police Department wants to warn all drivers of the hazards of distracted driving and is committed to enforcing all traffic laws to make the roadways safe for all drivers and passengers”, said Captain Kari Williams.
