VALDOSTA – Valdosta police have released the name of the man who was fatally shot outside his home Monday night.

Lenton Swint, 21, was reportedly shot after answering a knock at the door of his residence in the 1000 block of Cherokee Street, according to reports from the Valdosta Police Department.

At approximately 6:58 p.m., VPD officers were dispatched to Swint’s residence after receiving a report of a shooting, said VPD Capt. Kari Williams.

“Upon arrival, they found an African American male lying in the front doorway with a gunshot wound,” Williams said.

Swint was taken to South Georgia Medical Center by EMS where he later died.

A friend of Swint’s reportedly told police he walked with Swint to his home on Cherokee Street and saw two African American males standing in the yard, asking to speak with the home’s resident, Williams said.

“The friend said he later heard a knock at the door and a gun shot, then found the victim had been shot,” Williams said.

The VPD Person’s Crime Unit and the Crime Scene Unit were dispatched to the scene to conduct an investigation.

“From the investigation so far, this does not appear to be a random crime,” Williams said. “Evidence has been collected by the Crime Scene Unit and Detectives who are at this time following up on that information.”
