VALDOSTA – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that one of the two Afghan trainees who went missing six weeks ago from Moody Air Force base has been found.
Details are unclear, but an AJC reporter said he has confirmed through federal sources that the Department of Homeland Security located one of the men after the pair showed up in Virginia to possibly seek political asylum through an attorney.
Mirwais Kohistani and Shirzad Rohullah were just a few days away from completing their training at Moody when they did not report for duty on Dec. 7. The pair had been in Valdosta for a year learning to maintain a fighter plane. Several trainees graduated from the program and returned to Afghanistan a week after the men went missing.
The men reportedly underwent strict screening before being allowed into the program at Moody, and officials have maintain they do not believe Kohistani and Rohullah are threats.
The search for the second man continues.
