Driver Distracted by Child involved in Fatal Accident

VALDOSTA — A driver distracted by his own child results in a fatal accident Saturday.

Saturday night, Georgia State Patrol Troopers responded to a fatal crash on Troupeville Highway near Crosbytown Road in Brooks County.

A blue 1991 Dodge Dakota, traveling south on Troupeville Highway, was driven by Matthew Addison Brinson, 32 of Quitman, Georgia.

Brinson became distracted by his child, Matthew Addison Brinson, Jr., 2.  The vehicle left the road and traveled off the east shoulder of the roadway, overturning twice and striking a wooden fence.

Neither of the occupants were wearing seatbelts and were partially ejected from the vehicle.

Life Flight was called to the scene by law enforcement, but they were unable to stabilize the child for flight. The child was instead was transported to Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville.

Despite efforts to save him, the child died at the hospital.

The father was reported to be uninjured in the crash.

The crash is under further investigation by Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team. Charges may be pending upon completion of the investigation and conferring with the District Attorney. Troopers suspect distracted driving to be the cause of this crash. Troopers do not suspect alcohol or drugs to be a contributing factor.
