Release:

With 65.1 million U.S. households owning at least one dog, International Dog Day (August 26) is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our many furry friends. While a wide variety of breeds can make wonderful companions, some breeds are more favored than others.

To uncover which dog breeds are the favorites nationwide and in each state, Forbes Advisor surveyed 10,000 American dog owners. The results show that Australian shepherds and Bernese mountain dogs tied as Georgia’s favorite dog breeds.

Key findings from the study:

  • Bulldogs and Golden retrievers round out the top three most favored breeds in Georgia.
  • Georgia’s least favorite dog breed is Pembroke Welsh corgis.
  • Two shepherds ranked as the nation’s favorite breeds: the Australian shepherd (#1) and the German Shepherd (#2).

Commenting on the study, Jason Metz, Lead Editor on the on the Forbes Advisor Insurance team says:

“Australian shepherds, which ranked as America’s favorite dog breed, are intelligent, have high energy levels and are good family dogs. Aussies are also generally known to be in good health, but routine veterinary care is important, including monitoring for potential hip, elbow and eye conditions.

Some breeds are more prone to certain health conditions, and veterinary costs ranked as the second most costly recurring expense for pet parents, according to our study. Ensuring you have the best pet insurance plan for your furry friend can help offset costs in case of an emergency.”
