MIAMI – It was seventies night at Marlins Park on Friday night in the opening game of the series between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. There was a bit of irony involved considering Ichiro Suzuki is the only player on the home team’s roster that was even born in that decade.
The Braves flew south from Cincinnati looking to get back in the win column with ace, Julio Teheran (3-1), on the hill and matched up with Marlins’ pitcher, David Phelps (2-0). Teheran has failed to get out of the fifth inning in each of his last two starts and has seen his ERA rise to 4.74. The offense was able to rally behind their pitcher Friday night to take game one of the series 5-3.
The win did not come without two more, 400-foot shots by Giancarlo Stanton. One came within feet of taking out the Marlins’ cameraman, who was located where balls should not land in deep center field.
Stanton now has 10 home runs on the season and a major-league leading 35 RBIs, but told an ESPN reporter, “We lost. They mean nothing.”
The cameraman told the Marlins’ Fox reporter, “I had no idea it was coming my way. It landed about two feet to my left.”
Meanwhile, the Braves had to play small ball once again to defeat the division foes. Todd Cunningham got the call from Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursdayand tallied three hits, including a gamer winner in the eighth inning off Bryan Morris.
The pen for the Braves has had its recent struggles, and the late innings were a little shaky once again Friday night. It was, however, encouraging to see Cody Martin come away the win and Jason Grilli with the save in the ninth.
There were 25 total hits in the game from both teams, but this one came down to the clutch hitting of the Braves and the poor hitting with runners in scoring position (1-13) by the Marlins.
The win gives Atlanta sole possession of third place, while gaining a game on the first place New York Mets. The Braves have taken five games out of seven from the Marlins so far in the early season. First pitch Saturday will come at 1:05 p.m. from Marlins Park with Alex Wood (1-2) going against Mat Latos (1-3).
