MIAMI – Giancarlo Stanton was at it again Saturday afternoon with a long, 478-foot shot to center field, though it was not the most impactful one of the day.
In the top of the second inning, Jace Peterson hit his first career home run.
It was a grand slam to right center field.
Mat Latos has had his struggles so far this season against the Braves, already losing three times against Atlanta. On top of that, Latos left in the fourth inning after a line shot of the bat of his former teammate in San Diego, Cameron Maybin. It was a scary moment in the middle of the diamond, but the Marlins are calling it a leg contusion and he is considered day-to-day.
Peterson’s big fly was the big play that brought the Braves their second straight win against the Marlins, but Alex Wood’s (1-2) quality start by making key pitches in key moments cannot be overlooked.
Wood told the Atlanta Journal Constitution, “The best way to describe it is I made pitches when I had to. I’m still working on different things and piecing it together, but as long as we get the win, I’ll take that any day.”
Todd Cunnigham has made his presence felt. in his first two games this season after Kelly Johnson went down with an injury, adding three hits for the second straight night.
There has been a slight change in the starting lineup in recent days with Peterson batting lead-off, Nick Markakis batting clean-up, and Simmons hitting fifth.
The team has rebounded well on the latter part of the road trip and will go for the sweep Sunday afternoon starting at 1:10, before starting a two game series with the Rays on Tuesday night.
