VALDOSTA – The Valdosta Police Department has arrested an armed Valdosta man for narcotics after conducting a traffic stop.

Arrested: Jacob Tawain Mitchell, African American male, 43 years of age, Valdosta resident
On January 28, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m., a Valdosta Police Officer observed a vehicle driver not wearing a seatbelt. The officer conducted a traffic stop in the 600 block of Force Street, and contacted the driver, Jacob Tawain Mitchell, 43. As the officer was speaking with Mitchell, he advised the officer that he had a firearm in the vehicle and was a convicted felon.
Officers retrieved the firearm, which had an altered serial number. Officers also located approximately 50 pills, which were identified as being scheduled narcotics.
Mitchell was arrested and transported to Lowndes County Jail. He has been charged with:
- Possession of a Schedule II narcotic with the intent to distribute-felony;
- Possession of Tramadol-felony;
- Criminal use of an altered identification mark-felony;
- Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon-felony;
- Possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony-felony; and
- Driving without a seatbelt-misdemeanor.
“This was great proactive work by our officer. Because of his thorough investigation during the traffic stop, an illegal firearm and narcotics were seized, taking them off our streets.” Said Chief Leslie Manahan.
