VALDOSTA – On Thursday, the Valdosta Regional Airport was temporarily shut down when a 33-year-old female claimed to have ingested explosives.

On September 19, 2024, at approximately 6:20 am., the Valdosta Police Officer assigned to the Valdosta Regional Airport received information from a 33-year-old female, that she had ingested multiple explosive devices. Due to the nature of her comments, the officer isolated her in an open location away from the public, as well as the airport. The area around the airport was secured from all traffic, other than first responders.
Detectives and members of the department’s Crisis Negotiations Unit responded to the scene. As they began to talk with the female, detectives believed the female appeared to be in severe emotional distress.
Because of the threat of explosive devices, for the protection of the public and the female, numerous resources were requested to respond and assist in the investigation. With the assistance of Georgia State Patrol, Moody Air Force Base, Georgia Bureau of Investigations, and the Federal Bureau of Investigations, multiple areas were searched, and no explosive devices were located. The scene was deemed clear and released before 11:00 am., which did not affect any flights into or out of the airport.
The female was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Detectives continue to follow up with information relative to this case for criminal prosecution.
