Johnson Receives School Advisor Excellence Award

State Superintendent, Richard Woods along with the Georgia Department of Education, presented Hahira Middle School Engineering and Technology teacher, Curt Johnson, with the Middle School Advisor Excellence Award on November 24, 2020.  Each year, the CTAE Division at the Georgia Department of Education hosts an in-person Superintendent’s Recognition Session. This year, the recognition took place in the form of video and certificate recognition. Curt Johnson, HMS CTAE teacher, was selected for recognition!  Career and Technical Student Organizations, CTSOs, play an integral role in preparing students to become college- and career-ready members of society who will hold productive leadership roles in their communities.

Because Georgia CTSOs are co-curricular – which is different from an after-school club– CTSOs help students stay engaged in the classroom. CTSO students are better prepared to meet the demands of the workplace because they offer real-world experience to complement the academic studies of the classroom.

We are fortunate to have nine CTSOs in Georgia, and last year CTSO membership totaled over 183,000 students in Georgia.

Recently, Curt Johnson was named the Middle School Advisor of the Year for the National Technology Student Association.  Last year, under Mr. Johnson’s leadership, HMS captured the Georgia TSA Middle School State Championship title after competing in a total of 33 events. A few of the engaging and challenging competitions which HMS TSA regularly competes in include: Community Service Video, Construction Challenges, System Control Technology, and Video Game Design. The Community Service Video event is based on the National TSA’s Community Service Project-American Cancer Society. The TSA hosted an Escape room based on survival during a zombie apocalypse. Students and staff members who experienced the Zombie Escape Room made a donation to the Lowndes County Relay for Life. Currently, HMS TSA continues to work on the Construction Challenge event, which is a three-year-long project designing and constructing a school-based sensory room for students with special needs. The sensory room is being constructed in phases with aromatherapy being the latest addition to the project! Superintendent Woods thanked Mr. Johnson for his excellent representation of TSA, Hahira Middle School, and the state of Georgia. Superintendent Woods stated, “It is our privilege to recognize Curt Johnson for his achievements within your CTSO at the national level.”
