UPDATE: 5:52 p.m – A live Press conference revealed there were nine people on board the helicopter.
UPDATE: Kobe’s daughter Gigi (Gianna Maria Onore), 13, was also on board the helicopter and died in the crash.
Bryant was reportedly on his way to a travel basketball game with his daughter.
Those aboard the helicopter also included another player and parent, ESPN reported. According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, there were no survivors of the crash. An investigation is ongoing.
A source told ESPN’s Ohm Youngmisuk that the Lakers found out about Bryant’s death while on the team plane flying home from Philadelphia.
TMZ reported they were on their way to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. The Academy is in nearby Thousand Oaks.
A call for a downed helicopter in Calabasas went out at 10:01 a.m. local time, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. People who were out mountain biking in the area reported the accident.
Bryant lived in Orange County and used his Sikorsky S-76 helicopter to commute To Lakers games.
CNN reported that the helicopter made several tight circles over downtown L.A. before heading towards a lesser populated area in Calabasas at an altitude of 2300 feet.
CALABASAS, Ca. – A helicopter crash reported Sunday morning in California has been confirmed to be that of basketball phenom Kobe Bryant, 41.
He is listed as one of the four deceased, no one has survived according to a TMZ report.
Bryant was traveling with at least three other people in his private helicopter when it went down.
A fire reportedly broke out.
Eyewitnesses told TMZ that they heard the helicopter’s engine sputtering before it went down. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Less than 12 hours before, it was announced that LeBron James had passed him as highest scorer. Bryant gave his gracious shot out to James on social media and LeBron gave ESPN a moving interview about his memories of Kobe throughout his own career.

Bryant used a private helicopter routinely to avoid long commutes and considered it a tool to his fitness.
Considered to be a reliable craft, it could hold up to 13.
